Gutenzell – relicts, saints and baroque devotion

Monastery of Gutenzell, Shrine of the holy Martyr Alexander

A few weeks ago I was once again in the church of the former monastery Gutenzell. In addition to the famous baroque nativity scene this little known jewel of the Upper Swabian Baroque also entails the recently restored whole-body relics of several saints. Frequently destroyed and removed out of a false sense of modernity and enlightenment in the past, these little church still preserves a huge collection of relics in its original Baroque frames and shrines as rare examples of piety and deep devotion. That there also the relics of a „Alexander Martyr“ can be worshiped, I am personally delighted, of course, especially.
